The sixth grade classes of Evangelical Christian School have been raising funds to help pay towards their trip to Discovery Cove in May of 2008. For their latest fundraiser, a Read-a-Thon, they received pledges for approximately $8,000.
The Read-a-Thon consisted of 90 minutes of consecutive reading to promote National Children’s Book Week --November 12-18. This year’s theme was "Rise Up Reading!" The goal of National Children’s Book Week is to introduce children to new authors and ideas and encourage reading, reading, and more reading.
ECS Students enjoyed reading while relaxing with their favorite pillows and snacks. Mrs. Zink, one of the 6th grade teachers, reported that students read the entire time without complaining. She said that they seemed to really enjoy themselves.

On Friday, February 8, Evangelical Christian School’s K4 classes experienced extreme weather conditions. The day started off sunny and mid 70’s on the ECS campus, but by the time the K4 students arrived in their classrooms, weather conditions quickly began to deteriorate. Students, fortunately, were prepared for the wintry conditions with coats and gloves or mittens. By the time K4 students headed to the playground, conditions had worsened. Several inches of snow was on the playground. Students were so excited by the unusual weather that they quickly began making snowballs, becoming snow angels, and even cooling off after playing so hard over colorful snow-cones. According to K4 Lead Teacher, Carla Gerl, there were quite a few teachable moments that were initiated because of these extreme conditions. Her class read Clifford's First Snow Day; they observed an ice melt; they learned new vocabulary words and identified the beginning consonants for these wintry words; they completed a supposition journal entry, "If I could play in the snow, I would...". Students even enjoyed hot cocoa on this frigid day, and made Pizzeli's, sprinkling the italian cookies with powdered sugar so they would look like snowflakes. By the 3:10 dismissal, conditions miraculously improved, and students were able to venture home safely.
