Talua is no ordinary dog. She lives her life around assisting her owner,
Lauren Brown. Lauren is a Freshman at Evangelical Christian School. Her
classmates know Lauren to be an intelligent, cheerful, and high-achieving
girl who rarely shows signs that her disease affects her. According to
Lauren, she was born with the disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta or
Brittle Bone Disease. Lauren said, “Sometimes this disease makes me
rather frustrated because I can’t do everything I want due to my physical
limitations." This is where Talua comes into the picture. Lauren has had
Talua for five years. Talua was trained to help Lauren when the disease
keeps her from doing the normal things that she wants to do. According to
Lauren, “Talua helps me pick things up such as keys, papers, etc, open and
close doors, turn lights on and off, tug my backpack, pay at the cash
register, and just be my best friend for when I need her most—especially
when I am in pain.” Pain goes hand in hand with this disease; however, as
Lauren states, “The majority of the time I push myself because I want to
stay walking and strong so I can do as much as possible." The ECS facluty,
staff, and students are so proud to be a part of Lauren's life and are
constantly amazed at her achievements.

Voice of Democracy 2007-2008
The Voice of Democracy essay contest is the Veterans of Foreign War
scholarship program. Students from all over the country send in essays,
vying for scholarship opportunities from the VFW. Evangelical Christian
School has participated in this contest for the past twenty-five years.
Mrs. Scoone’s U.S. History classes submitted essays on this year’s topic,
My Role in Honoring America's Veterans. Essays that were selected to
represent ECS at the district level were written by Marina Boudreau (1st
place), Lauren Paul (2nd place), and Lauren Higgins (3rd place).
We are pleased to announce that our winner for the school has won the
first place position at the District level. Marina Boudreau, a Fort Myers
resident, will now present her essay in the Florida State level contest in
January. The VFW will send Marina and her family to Orlando for the
weekend to participate in this next level. Congratulations, Marina!

the Young Poets Contest. Her poem, Nature’s Symphony, was recognized as
being one of the Top Ten poets in the contest. According to Creative
