Some coaches build winning teams.

Others build championship programs.

A select few build a legacy that influences generations.

For more than three decades, Coach Dwayne Donnell has done exactly that, and now his remarkable career has been recognized on the national stage as he has been named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) National Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

The honor is one of the highest distinctions a high school coach can receive, recognizing excellence in leadership, sportsmanship, integrity, community impact, and sustained success on the court.

Since arriving at Evangelical Christian School in 2021, Coach Donnell has transformed the Lady Sentinels into one of Florida’s premier girls basketball programs.

In just five seasons, ECS has compiled an incredible 120-25 record, an outstanding 82.8% winning percentage, while capturing five district championships, four consecutive regional championships, and the 2024 FHSAA Class 2A State Championship, the first girls basketball state title in school history.

Those accomplishments are only a chapter in a coaching career that now includes well over 600 victories, placing Coach Donnell among the most accomplished high school basketball coaches in the nation.

Yet statistics tell only part of the story.

Coach Donnell has become known throughout Southwest Florida for developing young women of character, preparing them not only to compete at the highest level but also to become confident leaders in their schools, families, churches, and communities. His commitment to excellence extends far beyond wins and losses. Every practice, every game, and every conversation is an opportunity to teach discipline, perseverance, humility, and faith.

That impact is evident throughout the ECS basketball program.

Players compete with passion, represent their school with class, and understand that success is measured by more than championships. It is measured by the way they serve others, encourage teammates, and honor Christ in everything they do.

This national recognition reflects a lifetime devoted to investing in others.

It celebrates the thousands of student-athletes whose lives have been shaped by Coach Donnell’s leadership, the assistant coaches who have faithfully served alongside him, the families who have trusted him, and the school communities that have supported his vision over the years.

While championships fill trophy cases, influence fills generations.

Coach Donnell’s legacy will never be defined solely by more than 600 victories. It will be defined by the countless lives he has impacted through basketball and through his unwavering commitment to developing young people.

The Evangelical Christian School family proudly congratulates Coach Dwayne Donnell on being named the 2026 NHSACA National Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

This recognition is well deserved, and we are grateful to celebrate a coach whose influence continues to reach far beyond the game.
